TLM in Argentina: A Priest's Interview

In the occasion of Summorum Pontificum's 10th anniversary we are offering a translation from a parish priest's words describing for the first time the big picture of the current situation of the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) in Argentina. We aim to offer English-readers from all over the world the possibility to learn in some detail the general state of things regarding Tradition in the Pope's country of origin.

Last month was the 10th anniversary of Benedict XVI’s Summorum Pontificum. How would you describe the present situation of the TLM in Argentina?

Reality shows that in Argentina the case of the Tridentine Mass is the same for everyone willing to celebrate it. Europe is another thing; but here it is impossible to start celebrating Mass if the ecclesiastical head or parish priest doesn't want it. The outlook is extremely bleak.

People seeking Tradition often say that Argentine priests and Bishops should be more brave and risk themselves to provide TLM…

'Bravery' isn't enough. The only option left is to follow the example of the priest living in [the Italian movie character] Don Gabino's loft –a choice that if I am permitted to say, I'll be making in the short or long run. Or immigrate to a little spot in Europe where the bishop has at least a quarter of a sane personality. And notice that I am not asking for a bishop with faith. But at least with a minimum of human complexion in accordance with nature.

What is the Argentine Bishops' general attitude?

Argentina is scorched earth. There is no turning back. Bishops are walking pathologies.

This is an issue I speak with my priest colleagues: it is not worthy to continue betting on a priesthood disengaged from the founding 'pivot-hole'. It is impossible to set a liturgical pastorale (or whatever you want to call it) with s-i-c-k bishops and parish priests.

Anything else is wishful thinking, said with the greatest of respect. And with the deepest sorrow.

The subject is wide and it has its edges. "Me and my circumstances" as Ortega y Gasset put it. It is a pity that over here circumstances are the rule. If not, name me a sole bishop that might be an exception from my shallow analisys. ONE ALONE. Name me one, or at least name me a sole parish priest with an "open mind" capable of brooking (I don't even say 'approving') a vicar willing to do things right. Because I inform you that the ones that usually celebrate TLM are vicars. Maybe a parish priest here and there too, surely. And they are magnificent.

But as I see it, the lack is outright.

What are the possible consequences of starting to celebrate TLM in a regular diocese in Argentina? Might that bring a suspension ultimately?

I don’t think that celebrating ad Orientem or directly TLM might bring a suspension per se. Of course, that depends on several factors: which parish, which diocese, etc. In Argentina the Bishops and many parish priests don’t want a traditional ‘regrowth’. Some specifically out of fear of [Pope] Francis. Thus, I am not saying that a priest will be automatically suspended for celebrating ad Orientem, but he will end up that way sooner or later for the following reason: When the priest be removed, what is going to be done with the faithful that requested the ad Orientem or even the EF? Are they to be abandoned to the previous situation or will they continue to be assisted? There will be a conflict there and the bishop will profit from this confusing situation.
It has already happened with a well-known priest.

What is your experience with traditionalist faithful seeking a “Summorum Pontificum Mass”?

On the other side, the faithful have the particularity of being ‘particular traditionalists’. In the sense that they all want ‘something’ different from what is offered. Older or modern rubrics, more Latin or less Latin, the prohibition (or not) for women to attend without trousers, that the mantilla be mandatory or not, etc. And they want all of this said from the pulpit. This brings conflicts too.

Can you mention an example of this particular situation?

When the Military Bishop [of the Ordinariate] celebrated Mass in the EF in a church of Buenos Aires, these issues emerged even when only a few celebrations had taken place. The diocesan Bishops isolated him entirely, and even though he had received ‘congratulations’ from the Holy See, he was urged by his own clergy and the rest of the bishops to desist, which he did. And that was in the peaceful times of Benedict XVI.

What is the general position of conservative priests in Argentina regarding the TLM?

Even the most conservatives don’t understand the importance of celebrating facing the East (or the altar) and much less according to what is known today as the extraordinary form. Bishops fear this traditional regrowth and won’t approve TLM—in theory they consider it licit, but in practice they repress these celebrations.

A final word about regular faithful and their approach towards the TLM?

The faithful are the ones that resist these celebrations the most and are the ones who carry complaints to the bishopric. And then the Bishop uses them for the removal.

Is there any possibility of a positive change in the current sterile situation?

That’s it, my friend. That’s how things are. Maybe they will change, I don’t know. With this Pope I certainly doubt it.

This interview was elaborated with real and textual comments by parish priest in Argentina.

Bishop Athanasius Schneider in Buenos Aires: Impeded to Celebrate TLM Downtown

In the last days of September 2017 Bishop Athanasius Schneider visited Buenos Aires and the suburbs of the city for the very first time. While in the outskirts of the Capital City he did celebrate the Tridentine Mass (including the National Basilica of Our Lady of Luján), he was unable to do so in town. This is, a Roman Catholic Bishop was impeded to celebrate Holy Mass according to the extraordinary form in the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires.

Bishop Schneider celebrates Solemn Mass in the Basilica of Luján High Altar

In downtown Nuestra Señora de las Victorias parish in Recoleta, the sine que non condition to celebrate Mass was to exclusively use the 1969 Missal. Holy Mass was celebrated according to the Novus Ordo Missae, ad Orientem and all in Latin (except for the Readings and Psalm). The altar rails were made available for communion too. Bishop Emeritus Antonio Baseotto, from the Military Ordinariate concelebrated with Bishop Schneider along with the Redemptorist parish priest and were assisted by a Master of Ceremonies and several acolytes in surplices and copes, as in the old rite fashion. The parish choir from the neighbouring Nuestra Señora del Pilar provided a couple of selected pieces of music and some very common vernaculars Kyrie, Sanctus and Agnus Dei.

The Roman Cannon.

Despite the inability to celebrate TLM, it was in all a particular liturgical experience for many, showing that there is indeed a continuity in the liturgy of the Church despite the 1960s liturgical reforms, if properly celebrated.
Bishop Schneider was again unable to celebrate TLM in downtown San Agustín parish.

Catholic Banned by Pro-Orthodox Catholics

I write this in protest for my expulsion from a FB group called "Byzantine Catholics".
Due to the mediatization of the case of a group or Orthodox clerics in Puerto Rico who abandoned the Patriarchate of Constantinople to enter in communion with Rome, two strange individuals emerged in that group. One of them attacked and denigrated this initiative, saying it is against the agreements between Rome and the Orthodox Churches: that is, to restrict the welcoming of Orthodox groups to the Catholic Church while promoting an idyllic union of the Churches.
The one single goal of this agreement which was forwarded by the Orthodoxy is to stop the action of (Roman) Catholic missions in different parts of the world with Orthodox presence, and also choke the Ukrainian and the Russian Greek-Catholic Churches --the latter being today almost dead. This person in the group who belongs to an Eastern Catholic rite attacked Rome mercilessly and with the most unkind expressions. And also, to my absolute surprise, he commented publicly and with absolute frivolity that he is thinking of abandoning the Catholic Church and joing the OCA (Orthodox Church of America, a schism of the Russian Orthodox Church) the same way one might join a different sport club.
I was violently censored after indicating accurately that the head of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church isn't a patriarch but a major-archbishop. According to him I was attacking Archbishop Sviatoslav. This about-to-be-schismatic-person denounced me to a moderator, an Eastern Catholic deacon who not only refused to read my arguments when I protested for my expulsion, but also claimed that abandoning the Roman Catholic Church doesn't mean abandoning the Catholic Church. There you see, that's a Catholic deacon... See, no need to call any Latin modernists or Protestant ecumaniacs to build broad notions of Catholic Church.
Fellow readers, I call your attention to warn you about about the danger envolving not only many lay people but also many Eastern Catholic clergy who are acting a lot more pro-Orthodoxy and anti-Roman than prudence and sensibility requires.

I was banned from a Catholic group censored by a pro-Orthodox deacon serving in an Eastern Catholic Church, to whom I was denounced by an Eastern Catholic in his way to abandon the Church. Incredible--But you're warned now.
And if you want to make your own contribution, join the group and make a counter-balance against this minority Pro-Orthodox establishment and their Orthodox supporters.

Mass in the Tower of London

"Five hundred years ago, the universe seemed much more understandable than it does for us. All of existence was framed by a number of ceremonies and behavioral patterns which were a matter of course for people at the time. And the most important of them was the Holy Mass - that ring of charged words and actions which surround the central mystery in the Christian faith: That Jesus becomes man anew in the creatures of bread and wine. "We have reconstructed a High Mass from 500 years ago in an ordinary Swedish parish church, namely in Endre Church, one mile east of Visby in Gotland. We imagined ourselves to be participating in this high mass on an autumn Sunday in the middle of the 15th century. It is local people who are participating in clothes typical for the time, and we have tried as much as possible to reconstruct [something to do with (worship) services] in the Diocese of Linköping at that time - since Gotland belonged to that diocese. "The service is conducted in an incomprehensible language, a language incomprehensible to the people: Latin. Because church services at the time were not considered a medium for communicating information, except for silent prayers. Just as one cannot describe what is fascinating about a melody or a sight, one shouldn't be able to understand or describe the central mystery of the universe. The congregation waits for the central moment, when the bread and wine shall be transformed into the body and blood of Christ. "The priest was helped by a chorister, perhaps the [experienced?] youth whom [his soul has discovered?] and who with time would be sent to Linköping in order to attend the cathedral school. Songs, mostly from the Bible, were sung by the local cantor. We don't know exactly how the music went in the medieval churches. Maybe Endre Church had a specific order which required a qualified cantor like the one we shall see here. "The Sunday service began when the priest sprinkled Holy Water on the congregation. This was to remind them that they had become members of the Christian church through baptism. The Holy Water would drive away all the powers of evil. "Let us now place ourselves in the Middle Ages. Let us try to grasp the atmosphere in a normal Swedish parish church, in a time where man still believed himself cast out into an empty, cold existence, when Europe was still unified, and when the central mystery around which everything revolved was that Jesus Christ, had become man, had died, and risen again for all."
